If you fancy some serious shopping, Patong - only 15 minutes drive,
has to be the place. Shopping in Patong can keep the bargain hunter
busy for hours! Under the brightly lit stalls which line the streets
everything is available, from famous team football shirts to wooden
toys. The night market offers handicrafts, silk scarves, sarongs
and a variety of beach clothes, leisure wear, leather goods and
luggage, CD's, computer games and electronic gadgets and toys.
The main night market stretches all the way down the beach road
and into small secondary soi (lanes) on all nights of the week.
Along Rat-U-Thit Road, another market sets up 2-3 nights a week,
in high season, usually Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Lots of
stuff aimed at the teenage market - recycled jeans, funky shoes
and clothes, but also Thai sweets, orchids, ornaments and hair accessories.
Set-up time is usually around 6-7pm until late late late and remember
to bargain!
During the day, products available at the night markets can also
be bought from stalls and small shops in the Beach road area - but
don't go shopping until after 11.00am, they're not usually open
until late morning.
Shopping - North of Kamala Beach
Take the main coast road north, out of Kamala and you will come
to the village of Chern Talay and the luxurious Laguna Resort. Head
towards the Dusit
Laguna for Canal Village, a picturesque, lagoon side development
with upmarket boutique shopping. Browse through 40 shops to find
souvenirs, gifts, handicrafts, elegant Jim Thompson silks, tailors,
jewellery, leather, antiques and relaxing cafes. Most of the tuk
tuks will know where to go.
Also within Canal Village, are the Banyan Tree Galleries, which
specialise in products from around the Asian region. Hand-woven
textiles, garments, jewellery, handicrafts, contemporary and tribal
art, can also be found in outlets, located in each of the five hotels
within the Laguna resort.
